The AMD Ryzen 5 3600 has six physical CPU cores, which can each process two threads at the same time thanks to Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), so that the number of computing cores effectively doubles to 12 with the additional six virtual cores. The mid-range six-core model works with a high clock of 3.6 GHz per core, which precisely adapts to the respective load scenario in real time using Precision Boost 2 and within the Thermal Design Power (TDP) from 65 watts to up to 4.2 GHz Turbo increased. The silicon of the CPU cores is lithographed using the advanced 7nm FinFET manufacturing process with stacked transistors (also called 3D transistors) using Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) technology. The space gained on the processor die due to the significantly reduced structure sizes enables the integration of a total of 3 MB level 2 cache and a whopping 32 MB level 3 cache, which are particularly important for games. The I/O chiplet in the CPU package responsible for the data lines is produced using 12-nanometer FinFET production and provides 24 PCIe lanes, of which four lanes each are for the connection to the mainboard chipset and for connecting NVMe SSDs are reserved. This leaves 16 lanes for communicating with graphics cards, while additional PCIe lanes are provided for additional storage media, expansion cards, and peripherals depending on the motherboard chipset. PCI Express 4.0 with AMD X570 or B550 chipset AMD Ryzen 5 BoxIn combination with an AMD X570 or B550 high-end chipset, the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 supports version 4.0 of the PCI Express standard. PCIe 4.0 is backward compatible and can be used with all expansion cards from previous generations. In comparison to PCIe 3.0, twice the data transfer rate is possible per PCIe 4.0 lane, so that an NVMe SSD connected via four PCIe 4.0 lanes can achieve a theoretical read/write speed of up to 7.8 GB/s. The AM4 platform also features contemporary external device connections such as USB 3.1 Gen 2 with Type-A and/or Type-C connectors and high data transfer rates of up to 10 Gbit/s. The integrated memory controller of the CPU supports fast and energy-efficient DDR4 memory in dual-channel mode with or without ECC error correction at a native clock frequency of 3,200 MHz, with significantly higher clock rates being possible through overclocking. Automatic overclocking by Precision Boost Overdrive Precision Boost Overdrive Hardly anyone has to worry about overclocking with AMD Zen 2, because the CPU takes care of it all by itself: The AMD Ryzen 5 3600 is equipped with the Auto-OC feature Precision Boost Overdrive, which increases the processor clock by up to 200 MHz can increase beyond the factory limit of the maximum boost clock, provided that an AMD X570 or B550 motherboard is used and sufficient CPU cooling is ensured. High-end motherboards with AMD X570 or B550 chipsets usually have additional voltage converters (VRMs) so that the Ryzen 5 processor communicates with the X570 chipset to retrieve the motherboards unused power reserves and, depending on the CPU temperatures to increase its clock speeds independently. Unlocked CPU: Manual overclocking thanks to free multiplier In addition, all AMD Ryzen CPUs are “unlocked” and – as usual from the “Black Editions” and “K” variants of previous model series – have a free multiplier, so that overclockers can easily set the high clock rates manually in the BIOS or UEFI or by means of Software tools (e.g. AMD Ryzen Master) can further increase, assuming a corresponding motherboard with an OC-capable chipset such as the AMD X570 or B550 and sufficient additional cooling. Notes: An AM4 motherboard with AMD X570 or B550 chipset is required for PCI-Express 4.0 and Precision Boost Overdrive. Older chipsets of the 300 and 400 series require a BIOS/UEFI update to operate this CPU.
